Don’t do that, will you?

Words — like us in our lives — can do different things in the language, like having two jobs. The exact same word is used in a variety of departments in the language so that they do not create confusion. The word will, for example. Of course you know the future form in I will be there or It will be late. Will is also your intention, your free will, the will of the people is…. The document rich people leave for the partition of their assets is called the Will, usually written by a lawyer. The most beautiful use of will, if you will (no pun intended), is the softening of a command, the imperative case. Close the door, will you? Will you call me at 7, please? It produces the same effect of giving an order or command, but sounding nice and smooth even if the message is a negative one. Don’t do that, will you? Watch your mouth, will you? Will you tell me how good this lesson was to you?
