The Scroll

When inventor Johannes Gutenberg created the printing press in 1450 there wasn’t exactly paper as we know today. Paper was a thick substance similar to the canvas used by painters at the time. And the same way paintings were carried, the paper of the time was rolled, or scrolled, originating the scroll, a document or letter that needed to be unrolled to be read. Fast forward 500 years, computers or Information Technology is a new science which borrows words from other fields of knowledge. Mouse (animal), disc (circular figure), keyboard (originated in the piano) are some of the examples. And that’s why when you move an image up or down and to the sides in the monitor of a computer, you scroll it.

“Can you scroll down the page, please?”
