Coup d’état

As you become fluent in English, you notice that many words used in everyday language are not English, they are imported. Kimono (Japan), sauna (Swedish), cartoon (Italian), safari (Arabic), cigar (Spanish), guru (Sanskrit), karaoke(Japan), metropolis (Greek).

But the strongest word used in English comes from a revolutionary country, France, and the word is coup d’état, which means a sudden, violent, and illegal seizure of power from a government.

Today, January 6th, 2021, the American Congress is making official president elect Joe Biden. But Donald Trump (followed by 120 Republican house members and 12 Republican Senators) are trying a coup d’état.

They will not confirm, as members of Congress, the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. They are  claiming the election was stolen, that it was a fraud, and the votes should be recounted. It is Donald Trump last chance to overturn the election that made him a loser (he tried and failed all the others).

It is a historic day for the strongest democracy in the planet. So far, the democratic institutions have prevailed.
